Red clay is the reason so much concrete in central Alabama fails early. Engineers call it fat clay. It holds water like a sponge. After a wet spring along the I-65 corridor, that clay swells and pushes up on everything above it. A humid, rainless July pulls that moisture back out and the ground drops away. The slab is left bridging a void it was never built to span.
Standard installs ignore this. A crew scrapes the topsoil, pours four inches on bare clay, and calls it done. That driveway looks fine for two summers. By year three you see cracks near the apron, settlement at the garage, and water pooling where the pitch used to run.
We build for the movement instead of pretending it will not happen. That means excavating past the reactive topsoil, compacting a No. 57 stone base that drains, tying the slab together with rebar, and cutting control joints where we want the concrete to crack.

A Vestavia Hills homeowner had a cracked apron and a two-inch drop where the driveway met the street. Clay movement had hollowed out the base. We removed the failed section, excavated 12 inches, compacted a No. 57 stone base, set rebar, and poured a 4,000 PSI slab. Two wet springs later, the joints are still tight.
On a sloped lot off Highway 280 near the I-459 interchange, runoff off Shades Mountain was undermining a 20-year-old driveway. Replacement alone would have failed again. We regraded the approach, installed a channel drain and a French drain along the high side, then poured a reinforced concrete driveway with a widened turnaround. No pooling since.

You cannot stop clay from moving. You build so the movement does not matter. We excavate past the reactive topsoil, compact a No. 57 stone base for drainage, add rebar, pour 4,000+ PSI concrete, and cut control joints.
Usually yes for anything touching the public right-of-way: new aprons, curb cuts, or widening. Replacing in the same footprint often does not. Rules differ between Birmingham, Hoover, and Vestavia Hills. We confirm with your jurisdiction and pull the permit.
Expect roughly $7–$12 per square foot for reinforced concrete and $4–$8 for asphalt. Thickness, rebar, and slope work move the number. Asphalt costs less up front; Alabama heat shortens its life. We price per site.
Sometimes. If the slab is structurally sound and only the base settled, we can stabilize and correct drainage. If clay movement has sheared the concrete, replacement costs less long term. We tell you which after inspection.
Resurfacing runs well below replacement, but it only works when the base is stable and cracking is cosmetic. Over shifting red clay, an overlay usually cracks again within two seasons. We check the base first.
