If your driveway has cracked, buckled, or washed out, the soil is usually to blame. Southside sits on heavy red clay, and that clay never sits still. It swells like a sponge during North Alabama downpours, then shrinks hard through hot, dry summers. That shifting subgrade snaps concrete, buckles asphalt, and turns gravel into ruts. It happens fast.
Most contractors pour on top of that problem instead of fixing it. They skip the deep excavation and lay their surface right over unstable clay. Within a season or two, the cracks come back.
We do it the opposite way. At Mayhall Landworks, every job starts below the surface. We dig deep, stabilize the subgrade, and build on a compacted limestone base that holds firm no matter what the clay does underneath it.
Whether you need concrete driveway installation Southside AL homeowners can trust, or Etowah County driveway repair on a surface that already failed, we build it to last. A driveway that stays flat, sheds water, and doesn’t crack the first wet spring.

Stephen ZentzTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've had an outstanding experience with Mayhall Landworks. Chris, James and their crew turned a very complex, completely forested land-development project into a beautiful setting for our house. They communicated regularly, explaining each phase and the techniques they'd use. We relied heavily on their experience and advice and trust them as if they were developing the property for themselves. We will continue to call them for future projects, both large and small and will update this review with more photos of their future work. We recommend them to anyone seeking quality land-development and care. Steve and Erika Bhumi ShahTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A good driveway is built in layers, and every layer matters. Here’s how we do it.
First, we clear and excavate deep. We cut down past the loose topsoil and unstable red clay to reach ground we can actually build on. Skipping this step is why so many local driveways fail early.
Next, we grade for water. Coosa River basin runoff is no joke, so we set precise slope angles that shed stormwater away from your surface instead of letting it pool and undermine the base.
Then comes the foundation. We lay and compact a heavy crusher run limestone base, packing it tight so the subgrade can’t shift beneath it. Crusher run base compaction Southside driveways depend on is the difference between five years and twenty-five.
Last, the finish. Depending on your plan, that means steel-reinforced concrete, fresh asphalt, or a locked-in layer of dense #57 stone for gravel driveway paving Highway 77 property owners want.
We also handle driveway drainage culvert installation AL sites require where your drive meets the road. Done in order, done right.
A Green Valley homeowner off Highway 77 had a five-year-old concrete driveway split apart by red clay movement. We tore it out, excavated deep, and rebuilt on a compacted crusher run base with steel reinforcement. Two wet springs later, it’s still flat and crack-free.
A Cedar Bend property near the Coosa River needed a long gravel driveway that could survive heavy runoff. We installed a proper drainage culvert at the road, graded for flow, and topped a compacted limestone base with #57 stone. No washouts, no ruts.

We excavate deep past the unstable clay, then build up a compacted crusher run limestone base. That stable foundation absorbs the shrink-swell movement so it never reaches your concrete.
Angular limestone aggregate is the answer. Crusher run compacts into a locked, load-bearing base, and #57 stone drains well on top. Rounded creek gravel just shifts and washes out.
Usually, yes. Work in the public right-of-way near a state highway often needs county approval. We help identify and handle those permit requirements before starting.
Concrete needs time to cure. Light foot traffic after a day or two, but wait about seven days before parking vehicles, and closer to two weeks for heavy loads.
It depends on the base. If the foundation held, we can regrade and resurface. If the subgrade failed, a rebuild lasts far longer than patching over the same problem.
