Nothing is more frustrating than a pond that won’t hold water. You dig the bowl, fill it up, and watch it slowly drain away. In Southside, that happens more than most folks expect. The ground here works against you.
Unlike parts of Alabama with deep, water-tight clay, the Coosa River basin sits on semi-karst terrain and permeable silt loam soil. It drains naturally. Worse, the limestone underneath can hide fractures. Dig a pond wrong, and water pressure can blow the bottom out into those fissures, sending your whole pond straight into the aquifer.
That’s why sealing is everything here. At Mayhall Landworks, we don’t just dig a hole and hope. We engineer every pond to hold.
Depending on your site, that means a compacted sodium bentonite clay amendment or a heavy-duty synthetic liner built to stop leaks cold. From new pond construction Southside AL landowners want to retention pond repair Southside properties badly need, we build water features that stay full. Your investment holds water, season after season.

Stephen ZentzTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've had an outstanding experience with Mayhall Landworks. Chris, James and their crew turned a very complex, completely forested land-development project into a beautiful setting for our house. They communicated regularly, explaining each phase and the techniques they'd use. We relied heavily on their experience and advice and trust them as if they were developing the property for themselves. We will continue to call them for future projects, both large and small and will update this review with more photos of their future work. We recommend them to anyone seeking quality land-development and care. Steve and Erika Bhumi ShahTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A pond that lasts is built on a plan, not a guess. Here’s how we do it.
We start by mapping your site. We read the topography, test the soil, and locate the drainage patterns and any limestone risk before a single scoop of dirt moves. That survey shapes the whole build.
Next comes excavation and grading. We shape the basin and set precise bank angles so sudden North Alabama downpours shed off cleanly instead of washing out your shoreline.
Then we seal it. This is the step most crews cut corners on. We lay geotextile underlayment, then apply a compacted sodium bentonite layer or set a synthetic liner, depending on your ground. Bentonite liner installation Highway 77 property owners rely on is how we beat permeable soil.
Finally, we finish the structure. Rockwork, reinforced edges, and inlet protection lock the banks in place and give the pond a clean, natural look.
The result is a sealed, stable pond built to hold water for decades, not one wet season. Etowah County backyard pond builds, done right the first time.
A Green Valley landowner off Highway 77 wanted a one-acre pond, but the silt loam kept draining test pits dry. We mapped the site, excavated deep, and sealed the basin with a compacted sodium bentonite layer. Two summers later, it’s holding full with no seepage.
A Cedar Bend property near the Coosa River had a backyard pond leaking into a hidden limestone fracture. We drained it, located the fault, and installed a heavy-duty synthetic liner over geotextile underlayment. The retention pond repair stopped the loss for good.

We use one of two proven methods. A compacted sodium bentonite clay layer, or a heavy-duty synthetic liner over geotextile underlayment. Both stop seepage through permeable soil and hidden limestone fractures.
Often, yes, especially near the watershed. Size, location, and any dam structure can trigger county or state review. We help identify what applies before we dig.
We combine proper aeration, biological treatments, and shoreline aquatic planting. Aeration keeps water moving, good bacteria eat excess nutrients, and plants filter runoff before it feeds Coosa River basin pond algae.
Aim for a deep section of at least eight feet. That depth resists summer heat, slows algae, keeps water from stagnating, and gives fish a cool refuge through Alabama’s hottest months.
A seasonal check is smart, with a fuller service each spring. We inspect the liner, aeration, and shoreline, manage muck buildup, and catch small issues before they drain your pond or your wallet.
